Brandy Alexander History
According to cocktail lore the Brandy Alexander was popularize in London at the wedding
celebration of, the only daughter of King George the Fifth and Queen Mary, Princess Mary to Henry George
Charles Lascelles, the 6th Earl of Harewood on 28 Feb 1922.
The earliest reference to the Brandy Alexander recipe is credited to German-born bartender Hugo Ensslin. In
1917 he self published the last bartending guide before the start of the prohibition era. Entitled "Recipes for
Mixed Drinks" the guide listed the standard mixed drinks of the day, how to prepare them and introduced to
print new ingredients like grenadine, applejack and triple sec.
Pop culture history records the Brandy Alexander as a favorite drink of rock legend John
Lennon who endearingly nicknamed a Brandy Alexander his ‘milkshake’.
Substituting Brandy for Gin in an Alexander Cocktail a warmer and silkier version of the drink is mixed.
Perfect for winter afternoons or as a companion for chocolate desserts a Brandy Alexander is luxuriously creamy
and delicious.
